Hardware Out There

What have you got and what do you want? This seems to be one of the first questions we are asked about RVing. There are so many options out there… Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhomes as well as travel trailers, 5th-wheels, pop-up tent campers, teardrops, etc. If you care to see the differences, CLICK HERE. We have narrowed down our search and we already have our tow vehicle. We purchased a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD back in March. For you truck lovers it has a 6.0L V8 gasoline engine, 20″ wheels, Crew Cab, and 6.5′ bed and a 5th-wheel hitch. What do you think? We are taking suggestions for names. The thought is the tow vehicle should be masculine and the 5th-wheel (AKA “Land Yacht”) should be feminine, but that’s open to discussion as well.

Now on to the trailer. We have decided on a trailer instead of a motor home for 2 main reasons… 1) Cost. Motorhomes are expensive. 2) With a motorhome, if your engine or drive train breaks, you’ve lost your transportation AND your living quarters (unless you tow a “dinghy” which is a vehicle you tow behind your motorhome).

We decided on a 5th-wheel over a travel trailer for these reasons: 1) Stability: The front end of the 5th wheel attaches inside the bed of the truck over the rear axle yielding increased stability on the road and increased maneuverability in the campground. 2) Room: 5th-wheels tend to have higher ceilings and more storage than comparable-length travel trailers.

So we are in the market for a 2 or 3-year-old 5th-wheel because trailers lose about 20% of their value each year for the first 2 years. We’re looking for one about 30-32′ long and has an unloaded vehicle weight (UVW) of around 10,000 pounds.

As far as the brand is concerned, we’d love to have your input, but one that we have researched is the Grand Design Reflection series. Our favorite floorplan so far is the 303RLS model.

If you know of anyone selling one, let us know.
