Our only overnight in Wyoming so far was in the city of Buffalo. The trip from Rapid City to Buffalo was wonderful and the wildest moment on our travels so far.
About 50 miles from the South Dakota/Wyoming border off of I-90 is Devil’s Tower National Monument. It is a 900′ tall monolith composed of an igneous (volcanic) rock called phonolite porphyry. You may have seen it featured in the 1977 Spielberg movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Me was able to walk up and touch the base of the tower. If you look closely you may be able to see climbers on the tower in the photo on the right below…
After we left the tower we encountered a nearly disastrous storm outside Gillette, WY. Me kept thinking the road would turn away from the storm, but we headed straight for it! Thunder & lightning, crosswinds estimated at 60+ MPH were blowing rain and tumbleweed horizontally from south to north across the highway. Diggs felt close to being pushed off the road so Me & Tuggs kept dragging forward until we found an overpass to park under and wait out the storm. She was praying hard! Thank You, God for seeing us through!
A little timid after that experience, we decided to stay an extra day at our Deer Park campground in Buffalo to wait out more forecasted windy and rainy weather. The park lived up to it’s name the day we left.
We are scheduled to return to Wyoming in a few weeks, but for now… on to Montana.
